| Sucessful bid for Travellers Inn properties will protect and create housing for people suffering from poverty and homelessness |
Feb. 01, 2010
VICTORIA, BC – The Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness, which has been an active participant in discussions with the City of Victoria, the Capital Regional District and BC Housing to purchase some of the Travellers Inn properties is hopeful that the City’s recent bid for three properties will protect and create new housing for the region’s most vulnerable people.
“The kind of cooperative effort that has gone into this bidding process is exactly why the Coalition was set up in the first place,” stated Coalition Co-Chair Tony Joe. “I applaud the City of Victoria for submitting offers on three Travellers Inn properties. With Coalition partners working together I am optimistic we can create desperately needed new housing for people suffering from poverty and homelessness.”
The City submitted a bid to court appointed receivers on Friday, January 29, and it is expected that they will know if the bid will be accepted within the next 10 days. The properties are located at 723 Field Street, 710/712 Queen Street, and 120 Gorge Road.
The Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness is a community-based partnership of service providers in the non-profit and public sectors, advocates, business representatives and elected municipal officials, formed in February 2008 to lead the region’s commitment to end homelessness.
The goals of the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness are to house and support those who are homeless; provide the necessary infrastructure to lead, coordinate, monitor and ensure results on Victoria’s homelessness crisis; and to prevent homelessness from occurring in the future.
